I just went through this situation. I live in the Seattle area. Saturday I bought a 2006 9-5 Aero wagon in Vancouver, BC. I tried to drive it home but was turned back by US Customs because of the Canadian DOT sticker. Said they needed a letter of compliance. Parked it at a golf course and returned home. Monday began calling GM then Orio. I learned no Saab = no letter. GM has washed their hands of anything Saab. Orio could only verify that all recalls had been done. I began looking int using a registered importer because apparently that is the only way to get around the sticker issue. I went back this morning with the document from Orio. I think I got very lucky and was helped by an older Customs Officer who was familiar with Saab. He used to own a 900 turbo convertible. He said most of the younger officers just go by the book which says no sticker, no entry but he knows that the Saabs meet all US standards and went ahead and sent me through. If I knew 3 days ago what I know today I probably wouldn't have bought this car. Had I been required to go through an importer, $500 to $700, and wasted more time, it would not be worth it. Fortunately, all is good now.
