Probably then simple is the way to go if sound quality is not a big consideration. Honestly, something along the lines of NoSnaab's suggestion might work best if you can adapt to it.
My gut feeling is that you are not going to easily find a reliable multi-disc unit that is only 12" deep. That said, there are lots of compact single disc options, and not just high end. Eg you were looking at TEAC - they offer a compact cd player (PD-301).
Does your amplifier (or receiver) fit on the 12" shelf? Usually they are fairly deep also.
I hate to suggest it, but if you are really insistent on having multi disc capability, Bose does make a wave radio that takes in 3 cds and will fit on your shelf. As always, with Bose, it is overpriced for what it is (at least imho), and as the saying goes: "no highs, no lows, must be Bose"... If it has a line out, you could plug it into your normal system and just use it as a (costly) multi-disc player. That would buy you proper stereo separation and probably better sound quality assuming they don't do any bizarre processing of the signal before the line out (Bose is known for, among other things, accentuating certain spectral ranges).
