FWIW, I typically buy the smallest, lightest machine I can because I value portability over just about anything else. The Dell XPS 13 line has done me right for 12 years and four machines now. I have a Thunderbolt dock at home, which is connected to a pair of 24" monitors, my home LAN (like, wired), a USB Bluray drive, and a full size keyboard and mouse for working comfortably there... it's one cable (the Thunderbolt cable...) to remove the thing from power & peripherals and take it with me.

The next time I do this - probably next year - I will probably move to a tablet. The Microsoft Surface is dialed in now, and Dell/Lenovo/HP sell a couple "distant second" tablets that are functionally pretty good as well (though far less sexy). For me (and most people I know) the mobile use of a laptop is web surfing, email, and media consumption - maybe presentation - and for this a tablet is really a nice solution. When home, doing real work, the dock environment turns it into a full desktop experience. I would seriously look into this approach.

Unless you have "unusual" needs, don't buy anything that doesn't have an SSD. Don't settle for less than 8gb of RAM (similarly, 16gb is largely overkill). If you're going PC, definitely get a touchscreen - it seems nutty but you get used to it fast, and is especially nice for web browsing. Sitting here at my new job on a non-touchscreen laptop reminds me every second how often I use mine. Obviously a tablet will be a touchscreen. ;) Be sure you have at least two USB ports - if one is a Thunderboard/USBC that's even better... maybe even highly desirable. I wouldn't get hung up on >HD resolution or discrete graphics - for most people, FHD and integrated graphics are beyond fine these days.

HTH!
