OT: Best starter mechanic's tool kit?? Posted by MI-Roger [Email] (#882) [Profile/Gallery] (more from MI-Roger) on Sat, 22 Dec 2018 18:27:03 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
So my 36 year old Doctor son replaced the starter in his 2002 GrandAm today, by himself, using only the ~50 piece, $25 Household Tool Kit I bought he and his older brother when they both left for college nearly 20 years ago. Based on a phone call from him last night I am pretty sure he bought a universal adapter at the auto parts store when he picked up the replacement starter.
He had only the equivalent of a very poor trunk kit of tools, and had exhibited no inclination toward wrenching, or watching me wrench, while growing up. It was only after he bought his GrandAm new that he realized he could save real money by doing things himself - such as oil changes, headlight replacements, turn signal switch replacements, etc. He helped me install a new alternator in this car 2 or 3 years ago.
So I think he needs an expanded selection of tools based on today's win. He salvaged a small wheeled toolbox from an uncle a couple years ago, and received a good set of S-K screwdrivers last year. Now he needs more wrenches, sockets, pliers, and other tools for auto/mower/snow blower maintenance to place in his empty tool box.
Lowes has a Kobalt brand 300 piece kit that is equipped with form fitted trays only, since he already has the wheeled tool box.
I am looking for recommendations for other D-I-Y mechanic's tool kits.
Thanks
