Sometimes it seems to make sense to buy specific tools in small groups (sockets, long-wall sockets, etc.) rather than in sets where you get things you don't need and, as has been said, many sets up the numbers with cheap items. I know this will get me in trouble with some folks, but I do most of my work with Harbor Freight tools and have had few problems. They have increased their quality over the years so now you have more choice in the grade of tool you buy. But I have a HF spanner set I bought thirty years ago that is still going strong. And don't forget tools you borrow from auto parts stores for those you will rarely use.
