A thing I always recommend to people looking at getting a tool collection going is Gearwrench's "infinite depth" tool set - Sears sells a similar/compatible line called Max Axxess. They are hollow sockets with shallow heights, meaning they can really effectively take the place of regular sockets, deep sockets, and box wrenches all at the same time. They are not super sturdy - I wrecked a 17mm socket on a Ford cam pulley - but they do take a remarkable amount of abuse nonetheless. I highly recommend them for their versatility - you get a lot done with a small tool set.
