I went this route a few years ago after getting frustrated with the mishmash of hand-me-downs and junky tools I had. I think you're on the right track with a quality set of the essentials. A set is so much cheaper even factoring in a bit too much redundancy and while it's fine to scrimp on things you use occasionally a good quality basic set is absolutely worth it in my book.
I got the below from Craftsman and think it's good value and looks quite similar to you Kobalt set. I got it in part because of the case though as I was tired of having unorganized tools, the plastic is light weight as I do have occasional to lug it around, and the top has ample room for extra tools beyond the set. I filled up my old tool box easily with less commonly used tools.
In addition to the set, I think the below are on the essential list for any home mechanic:
Breaker bar (looks like the kobalt set comes with one)
1/2" large deep socket set
3/8" ratchet with a flexible neck
universal joints/wobble extensions
Torx bits if working on European stuff and not in set
5 lbs hammer
I also really love my Gear Wrenches as a 'luxury' but Justin's recommendation looks super cool tool.
