I've wondered the same thing. And it seems suctioning to the dash itself, while this can work, may also rip the dash surface, at least on some cars. If only someone thought to put a universal mount hole into the dash center from which all accessories could be installed it. Look how long it took to get Bluetooth into most cars or car seat mounts.
