Calipers, the long of it
Posted by Paul from Palmyra, PA [Email] (more from Paul from Palmyra, PA) on Thu, 24 Jan 2019 12:18:53
I've been thinking about brake calipers lately, maybe because I've watched another winter's salt corrode those on my 9-5s. It seems new SAAB calipers are not available for many applications and rebuilt calipers can be a risky proposition with poor quality control always a problem. Who wants to return parts and do a job several times before one works? Another problem I've encountered with rebuilt calipers is that they rust almost instantly and within days look worse than the caliper being replaced. Now I've discovered Cardone, a rebuilder, sells an "Ultra Premium Caliper" with a silver powder coating that could be a possible solution. But I don't see a listing for the rear calipers for 9-5s, maybe because they are replaced less and are thus less frequently rebuilt. I also see Pro Parts is selling new calipers, made in China. It makes me wonder if they are any good, and if they have any kind of decent finish that won't corrode after one salty day. I'm not very keen on painting calipers because it's a lot of work and they seem to look pretty dirty after a short time unless you like to take your wheels off to clean them. They do look nice though in the new car ads.
Has anyone had any experience with the powder coated rebuilt calipers or the Chinese calipers? Even someone not concerned about appearance will need a new caliper eventually.
