Local bike shops (LBS, in the cycling parlance) vary wildly in quality, at least in these parts. When my son and I went shopping for a serious road bike for him a few years ago, some stores acting like they were doing us a favor just to show us some bikes - which were not cheap. Eventually we found a store that took a lot of time to make sure we got the right bike: no hard sell, didn't try to steer us to a particular brand, etc.
A couple years later I went through the same process for myself. It seems that each store kind of has a distinct "personality". Some are clearly only interested in racers, some are heavily brand-oriented, others really try to get you into the right bike regardless of make or price, and then there are the tiny shops with great personal service, etc.
I'm lucky in that there are 2 great shops in a short riding distance from my house, and one specialist who is maybe 25 minutes away out in the boonies, but well worth the trip when I need something a bit more extensive and want to save some $$.
I agree: supporting your local LBS in an age when folks buy a bike-in-a-box online is important!
