I'm not quite sure when it started, but Audi as of late seems to have gone "hatchback happy"... they've got a ton of hatchback models. "Real" hatchbacks, not SUVs!
Personally I have my eye on the B9 (2018+) S5 sportback... it checks a lot of the same boxes as my Aero did. European character, excellent handling without a too-harsh ride, great acceleration, and the practicality of 4 doors plus a hatch. It's way out of my price range at the moment, but in a few years...
A big point for Audi IMHO is that you can buy a Ross-Tech VCDS diagnostic/programming computer for reasonable money ($200 and up) that will do almost everything the factory one will. It enables you to do a lot of things with the car that on other makes would require a visit to the dealer.
