More headroom then the Solara hard top. Trunk's pretty big too,
and trunk space doesn't disappear if you put the top down like
with some hard-top convertibles.
Of course they've been out of production for over 10 years, but
there are plenty on the used car sites.
Pluses: Toyota V6 + Smooth 5-speed auto transmission, space, top seems
pretty solid and reliable (you latch/unlatch by hand, electric
motors to raise and lower, not too much to malfunction). Cold AC,
the only thing that's gone wrong is the alternator in 4 years.
Top down windows up is pretty comfortable even at highway speeds
at least in the front seat.
Minuses: not as solid on the highway as a Saab, or even my first-gen
Fusion. Could be my car needs front end work. Less than perfect
safety ratings. Kind of thirsty on gas. Visibility out the back
is bad. Doors are very big. We drive around parking lots looking
for a spot where there's space on either side and we can pull forward
to get out. The few reviews bash it based on handling, I don't think
it's that bad, but I never push things. And you have to do the timing
belt every 100,000 miles or so. Auto-shift mode seems sort of
pointless, although dropping it down from 5 to 4 helps for steep
hills at highway speeds so I guess there's that.
There aren't a lot of options, but don't give up. There's nothing quite
like a 4-seat convertible for indulgent luxury.
