MRI does not have the resolution to distinguish between the appearance of tendinosis vs. a partial tear. Tendinosis is mucoid degeneration (soft, lacking collagen fibers) of a tendon, and a partial tear is a tear that does not go all the way through. In my experience, when you see high T2 signal on the MRI, there is a partial tear. Ultrasound is able to distinguish between these. You would want to go to a sports med doc who has been doing their own ultrasound scanning for a few years, to make sure you're getting an accurate scan.
