c900 - anecdotal Posted by Snowmobile [Email] (#686) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Snowmobile) on Sun, 14 Jul 2019 17:58:20 In Reply to: Re: 1995 Saab 900 crash test, AlexA, Fri, 5 Jul 2019 17:13:06 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
My mechanic said (this was a number of years back) that he had a customer who was hit head on offset (like the newer test) in a c900 by a good sized truck - between pickup and cube van size at around 30-40mph. No injuries, though probably lots of damage to the car.
Where the c900 and 9000 don't do as well is side impact by a tall vehicle. The 9-5 was the first car designed to accommodate this (with the introduction of the folding b pillar). It was SAAB safety testing that identified this problem, and at the time the 9000 was about the safest car available (eg was "Safest Car in Sweden)... There used to be a youtube video of them smashing a land rover into the side of a 9000... IIHS followed SAAB in introducing the test, and the 9-3ss was the only car initially that fully passed the IIHS test as 5 stars (the 9-5 got 4* due to the rear passenger head contacting the side of the car since the 9-5 has no side curtain airbags).
I think overall, the c900 was probably safer than the ng900, though it might depend on the specific type of collision. Those c900's are remarkably tough.
