I have an FAA permit to fly, must keep it in line of sight and under 400 feet elevation. There are also no-fly zones you can look up in a database, but my controller downloads that info and notifies me of such areas.
Most important thing is to be safe and considerate. If you're on an island somewhere and keep it away from airports and under 400 feet, I think "line of sight" can still mean 5 miles offshore, turn around, get a good photo, and fly 5 miles back... I still had 14% batter left at landing. :-)
