Web Server Upgrade Completed and more about the BB's. Posted by Scott Paterson [Email] (#13) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Scott Paterson) on Mon, 18 Sep 2000 17:36:33 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
The Apache web server upgrade went well with only minor temporary hiccups. This upgrade will allow me to begin work on some serious upgrades to the bulletin board systems.
The look and feel of the bulletin boards is not going to change. I very much like this expanded thread view layout and am going to keep it. However, I'm going to be moving the bulletin boards over to a full-on database implementation using mySQL and PHP. This will give us the following features:
1. Unlimited archiving.
Because each post is inserted into a database and the index page is generated dynamically, it means I have much less admin work to do keeping the bulletin board indices to a reasonable size and properly archived.
2. More powerful, bb-specific search engines.
Each bulletin board will have its own search engine.
3. By Date, By Thread, and By Author Indices.
If you look at the By Date index, you'll get postings listed in the order posted - most recently posted at the top. So even if someone posts to a thread that began a good while ago, in the By Date index their posting will appear at the top of the page.
By Thread is what you are already used to seeing. However, one thing that will change is that the entire thread hierarchy (navigation) will appear in each message of a thread, not just the responses to that message.
By Author - If you are reading a posting and want to read more by that particular author (assuming the author uses the same name or alias to post), you can follow a link to see all posts by that author.
I'll also be creating more model specific bulletin boards. This will include separating out the 9-5 from the 9000 bulletin board and the 9-3 from the NG900 bulletin board.
I'm also considering a performance oriented board. This would cover performance variants such as the SPG, Aero, Viggen, and aftermarket performance.
I have an amazing amount of work to do to get this done, so it will be awhile before these changes are rolled out. You may see some hiccups in the process (e.g. archiving may temporarily be disabled). Please excuse the inconvenience whenever the unexpected happens and your patience will be very much appreciated.
Thanks,
-Scott
