It boils down to the fact that Saab, Audi, Jaguar, and everyone else
can't please all potential customers.

Personally, unlike you, I'd prefer the 9-3's to have more engine noise.
I had some exhaust modifications done to make my Viggen more to my
liking. I had a Jaguar XJS which I had to do some intake modifications to
so that I could hear the engine. The viggen has the interior styling
differences I like over a normal Saab interior, which is also nice,
except for 9-3 climate control knobs, which I don't have.

I like Jaguars too, alot. And the Aston Martins are real cool too.

The girl I am engaged to prefers manual tranmissions in cars, so I
am lucky. I think the tiptronic or J-gate or whatever people want to
call the automatic/almost-manual tranmissions is a good compromise
for someone who shares a car with someone who prefers automatics, but
car makers don't like to have too many tranmission varieties in use.

I'd be very afraid that Saab would do like Jaguar and dump the manual
transmission altogether in favor of something like that. My local Saab
dealer is selling mostly automatics these days, and rarely has any
good deals on used 5-speeds which people might trade in for a 9-3 or
9-5. I have a hunch that most of these people would not want stiffer/sportier suspensions anyhow, or non-conservative interiors.
