All the manufacturers seem to be rushing to add the SUV. But with high fuel prices and poor fuel economy 10 - 18mpg can really suck even with a 40 gallon tank. The other spectrum is the toy wanna be SUV like the CR-V and Forester. Why bother? FUll time 4x4 and all wheel drive for the masses doesn't make much sense. You'll only need it a few times a year if you live in climates with snow or on a muddy road. My theory is this, people drive around with 4 drive wheels, get into trouble then can't get out because they were able to get into more trouble than they would have with 2 wheel drive. Use the 4 wheel drive to get out of trouble. More new cars have traction control and how often do most drive in 6"+ snow? Most people don't. If you live in the mountains buy the SUV or awd car it's a no brainer.
Bottom line is with higher and higher fuel prices one must ask, do I really need the SUV or two SUV family. Sure they look cool but I think more people are becoming concerned with cost of operation 50% higher or more fuel costs really add up if you drive a lot. Just my 2 cents. Take it for what it is worth.
