If they are offering you $5000 on the trade-in, the car must be in pretty darn good condition and they'll probably fix it and sell it for much more -- or keep it for themselves.
according to kelly blue book (kbb.com) a 'good' condition trade-in is $4310. excellent is $4755. the retail for the car is $8285. these prices are for central NJ and for a turbo, 5sp, hatchback.
I went from a '89 900s 5-spd to a '95 900s auto.
I really liked the classic but with A/C problems, the amount of traffic I experience in NJ, and the fact that the car had 150k on it and it was getting rickity (I bought it used with almost 100k), I traded it in for an NG900. the fact that it was also under manufactures warranty also persuaded me to purchase it. there are things I don't like about the car but there are also things I love about the car.
I don't think you'll be disappointed in the NG, but the OG does handle a little better -- I think. I drove a '90 turbo convertible (5-spd) and a '97 turbo convertible last year and since the '90 was taken care of so well, I like it better. too bad I couldn't justify buying it -- i didn't need two cars, and the hardtop/hatchback couldn't be eliminated.
If it's a 5spd and you've had it since new, I'd look to keep it. it's got to be paid off by now, right? will $700 kill you? probably not if you are looking to spend $10k.
what's the current problem? what the condition both mechanically (other than problem) and cosmetically?
just my 2 cents.
good luck whatever you decide,
Ed R
