I came across a nice column celebrating the joys of manual transmissions and thought I'd pass it along. I hope I've inserted the link correctly.

Although my very first car was an automatic, a 1963 Plymouth Valiant with the push-buttons on the dash, I learned to drive in a 1968 VW Bug and I still remember the experience, especially my Uncle Jim yelling at me and criticizing my technique! Since the old Plymouth bit the dust those many years ago, it's been manual all the way, through a succesion of VW's (Bug, Micro-bus, Rabbit, GTI), an Alfa GTV, and a Classic OG SAAB 900. I did however break down when I bought my pick-up and went with an auto-box.

Maybe I'm getting old, but I recently test drove a 2000 9-3 base with an automatic, and actually found myself liking it quite a bit. The 9-3 manual linkage is not the most precise in the world. But, my old Alfa also required a certain "knack" to shift properly. That was part of the charm!I'm single. So, I could not honestly say that I'm only buying an automatic "because of my wife". I'll probably come back back to my senses come buying time and "stick with the stick". I've also never tried a car with one of the newer manu-matic transmissions. And I know SAAB doesn't offer such on option, at least not yet. Does anyone out there have experience with them, and feel these are truly useful?

I'm kind of new to the board, and I'm sure the subject of transmission preference has been asked before. So I'm sorry if I'm just retreading old ground. But I was wondering. How many folks out there have an automatic, not just because of the wife or girlfriend, and not just because of stop & go driving, but simply because they prefer it?
