I defense of my curent choice of an automatic transmission, let me say I learned to drive on the 'farm truck' with a stick, my previous SAAB (a 1984 900T) was a stick, and my 'other car' is a 1991 Alfa Romeo Spider 5-speed manual.
But owing to older parents who occasionally use the 1998 SAAB 900SE and a wife with MS who may have to use an automatic before too long... I chose to buy an automatic this time around. I have to admit that with the Seattle area traffic jams I have grown to love the simplicity of the automatic. Put it in Drive, use sport mode if you wish, and just drive. I miss a manual on the few occasions that I get out of the traffic and find myself on a winding two lane road with no one around. But the SAAB with an automatic meets the bill 95% of the time and I am glad that I have it. (And I am glad I have the Alfa to remind me how much fun a manual tranny can be.)
