It seems the brunt of the impact upon roll-over occured near the passanger side C pillar. Who knows exactly what happened, but possibly the car spun 90 degrees to the left, flipped over and did the damage that you see.
The 9-3 is, of course, based on the NG900, and yes, they did all sorts of tests to that car. Saab tested the roof of the NG900 by increasing a load downward onto the roof to determine deflection. It was done without doors or windows in the car, significantly reducing the cars rigidity. Even still, the results were much better than those from the 9000 with doors and windows!
Also, check out the picture of the roof. See how deformed it is, even on the driver's side. That could have easily wedged the door shut. The car was upside-down, so maybe it was not possible to open the door anyway.
I can see your concerns, but all this happened at about 50 MPH (he said he was going 65 and tried to slow down). Regardless, he walked away completely unhurt. I think that speaks for itself.
