Not being able to make them last may be one factor..
Another is that in some markets, the U.S. being a big one, people like to count the number of pistons as the gauge of how good an engine is. People think 4=slow, noisy, etc. Most people will gladly buy a v6 over a turbo 4 even if the turbo 4 is better in every way. I've gotten in talks with people several times, and most simply will not give up the notion that more displacement and more pistons is inherently better and that turbos are inherently bad.
I recently rented a mustang on a trip. It had a 3.8L 6 that would easily be outperformed by either our saab 2.0L 900T or our 2.8L 328. The car was garbage aside from that, but the average american consumer will buy the mustang as a performance car against the other two without a thought.
I mention this because it seems saab will be going this way too, with a compact gm 4.2L v8 being an option in the 9-5 in the future. Like it or not, many more american cunsumers will then examine the 9-5 when the v8 is available. Based off the LS1. we'd expect 260hp and 260lb-ft of torque. I do think moving to the gm 3.5L 6 would be better than using the asymmetrically turbocharged opel 3.0L--the 3.5L makes more torque all the way across the band even without the turbo, with similar weight, lower complexity, same or similar mileage, and no turbo lag. And sharing an engine would save saab money. And GM plans to make a supercharged 3.5L soon; 300+ hp is expected.
I don't care if a motor turbo/non-turbo personally, as long as the car drives well, is reliable and easy to maintain, and is efficient.
