These are all good points. Some comments:
1. Supposedly when they went to the 9-3, SAAB stiffened the body significantly. SAAB has always tried to keep things simple, and an independent rear suspension would be more complex and cost more, too.
2. SAAB has had continuing rattle problems related to the rear seat and the hatch in the 900/9-3. Don't know why they haven't been able to solve this one.
3. Small brakes on GM big cars - it's a case of the bean counters winning out over the engineers and safety considerations. I, too, hope that SAAB doesn't become a victim to this.
As to the car magazines, they seem to get bored with a design after it's 3 or 4 years old. Just because a design has been around for six years, doesn't necessarily mean it's obsolete. I think the car mag guys just want something new to report on - it makes their job easier.
