I've always liked the look of Land Rovers (the Discovery, the Defender and the Range Rover), always thought they were classy. But I know nothing about their reliability. I ridden in them, but never had interest in buying any SUV for myself. The car magazines know that 99% of buyers will never use these things as true off-road machines, and so they rate them with a bias towards on-road performance.
Tests, such as Car & Driver's, often rate the Land Rover as a top performer in "true" off-road conditions, while downgrading its ranking in the "on road" portions of tests. So it doesn't finish at or near the top. Some of the newer "car based" or "uni-body" SUV's (Lexus, Acura, BMW, etc.) are all rated better in the on-road portion of comparison teats, but these vehicles, while fine "all weather" performers, are not really capable of handling true off-road use. The Land Rover is.
So, if this would be a vehicle for your fiancee, who will never take it off pavement, I'd go for one of the other choices, unless she drives it and is happy with it and the price is just too good to pass up. But as a strictly on road vehicle, I think something else would be better. Does she really feel she has to have an SUV? Can't talk her out of one? Of course, especially at this stage of the game, you have to keep the lady happy, right? I recall reading recently that BMW intends to supplement their SUV range with an "X-3" model, using the 3-series platform as a starting point, but I don't know when it would come to market. Land Rover also intends to bring their smaller "Freelander" model to the USA withinn a year or so. And, of course, SAAB's attempt is on the way as well.
