My wife's 2000 Audi A4 has the optional xenon low beams, and after using them for 10 months all I can say is..... any other type of headlight system is inferior for poorly lighted, rainy, winding backroads. Especially for a middle-aged person with reduced night vision.

The Audi lights have self levelling, as is required in Europe. They use angle sensors front and rear, and a stepper motor at each low beam to keep the lights aimed correctly. I have never been flashed by other drivers, and while the lights _are_ extremely bright when viewed from low down, from a typical driver's eye height they are not blinding. Their greater brightness is very obvious, however - if they were incorrectly aimed they would truly be a hazard to others.

I have not yet driven in fog. I did rewire the fog lights on her car so that they could be turned on independently from the low beams in case we encounter a thick pea-soup fog. The fog lights are conventional halogen and low down - they should work better than the brilliant white xenons in that situation.

If I could buy a 9-5 with these lights I would pay extra for them. They are a $500 USD option on the Audi, and worth every penny.
