Just to throw on my $.02, I have a 73 VW Thing that I love dearly. It is easy and cheap to fix (when it breaks down, hardly ever), and I will follow any Jeep (or Bronco) or whatever ANYWHERE! The Type 181 "Thing" was car designed for military use as a radio car, and had to be able to follow German tanks or truck convoys anywhere they went. The suspension is much like a beetle, but much stiffer. This in itself even makes for a car that not only can go anywhere, but sticks to the road too. The design is loosely based on a Nazi war vehicle known as the "Kublewagon" or "Bucket Car" from WWII. Hitler asked Porsche for a car that would scale the world pole to pole. He got it. Laugh you may, but that tiny country damn near took over the whole freakin world. I might add that I can remove, rebuild, and re-install the engine in 4 hours if I work fast. 4 hours 15 minutes with a new clutch. Total cost: $400 for top of the line components. How much is that Land Rover starter again?
