Body work question

I'm considering buying a saab 9000 aero from a friend going through a divorce. A few months back he was pulling out of a driveway and hit a car. The damage is to the front left fender and bumper area. He phoned his insurance and discovered that the insurance had lapsed. Long story short, because of the divorce and the ugliness, he did not receive the insurance bill at his new place. To fix his car he'd have to come up with the $8,000 a repair shop quoted him. He stuck it in the garage and bought a new BMW.
I'm considering buying the car for very, very cheap and fixing it myself. I've gotten similar quotes to repair and have even gone in search of the body parts myself at junk yards. Went to one that specializes in Saabs, BMWs, VWs. They didn't have the parts there but in their other yard about 90 miles away. They offered to fix the car themselves replacing the bumper and fender and headlight and paint. Making it look brand new. They quoted me a real low price.
My question is this. Is it safe to allow a place that buys and sells recycled auto parts to fix your car?
