Wow! "it's just a vehicle for transportation when it boils down to it." To me, that's the essence of what a SAAB ISN'T! or at least shouldn't be. If all you want is a vehicle for transportation, buy an Accord. or a Camry. or a Chevy! The essence of the SAAB driving experience is that it is MORE than just a vehicle for transportation. Therefore, if (or when) SAAB builds an SUV, if it doesn't embody SAAB's unique driving characteristics, then it won't be a SAAB to me, no matter what name they put on it.

"If I needed an SUV or minivan...would it be better to buy a Dodge Caravan or a SAAB SUV?" For me, it would depend on whether the SAAB SUV retained the unique driving and practicality of former SAABs. If the SAAB SUV is built in Mexico and drives and handles just like any other American SUV, then I would buy whichever model I thought was the better car for my needs. To buy a SAAB just because it is branded a SAAB but contains no SAAB characteristics, would just encourage GM to further eliminate unique SAAB characteristics in future SAAB designs.

Unique characteristics CAN be maintained even when building two cars off the same "platform." Drive the Lincoln LS and the Jaguar S sedan - they drive like two completely different cars, even though they are built off the same platform. Or, for that matter, the same can be said about the Oldsmobile Intrigue and the Buick Regal. The Olds handles and drives like a European sedan, the Buick is much more like the traditional American sedan in its handling.
