If policy and opinion in the middle east can be turned strongly against terrorism, in light of the whole world seeing just how grotesque it can become, that would be a far more valuable result, IMO, than anything which could be accomplished by violence. Clearly, the perpetrators need to be brought to justice and any government responsible also held accountable (although what this means is unclear and depends on just how responsible they are). But memory in the middle east is not only long, but also frequently twisted. What we see as a cut and dry situation is not viewed the same by the middle eastern population, who grow up with a quite different view of things. We may think that their view is wrong, and whoever supports the WTC attack is clearly about the most wrong they could be, but the fact remains that until you change thinking and attitudes, terrorism will continue.

So how do you do that? I doubt it is by military force. There are numerous examples of how this hasn't worked in the middle east. It worked, in some fashion, against Nazi Germany, in that most Nazis are gone, and we have good a good relationship with post-war Germany, but those were people who saw the world much as we do. Middle easterners are different.

Notice how much effort is made at propaganda in Iraq. They are careful to turn the attitudes of their population against us because they know the strength of public opinion, even an uneducated public (maybe especially an uneducated public!). What if the majority of the population over there slowly began to view their leaders as deranged and inhumane?

I'm horrified to think that an entire country, such as Afghanistan or Iraq, may be behind this. What the heck do you do then? Start a war which will continue in the hearts and minds of middle easterners for generations? Does anybody think that such a war will be clearly defined and will end when it ends?
