Baby, you're much too ... smooth ...

Hi,
I have a 9-5 Linear with 2.3 LPT I4 engine. What puzzles me is that
this engines is extremely smooth, much smoother than an I4 has any right
to be. I am an electrical engineer. So, I did not take dynamics in
college, but I have known a couple of very good dynamics professors,
and they assure me that I4 is a configuration most prone to vibrations
and such.
Is the smoothness attributable entirely to the fact that I do not
have to flog the engine to get lots of power? By the way, I really hate
having to rev and engine really high to get decent power from it. I
almost feel sorry for the engine.
Does the turbo mute the engine noise? I like to have the radio off
so that I can hear the tires screech when I'm driving really fast through
twisty two-lane black-top in my rocket ship ... I mean 9-5. The noise
from the engine is a delightful baritone and not soprano as I've come
to expect from I4.
So, just how does Saab make its I4 so smooth?
thanks
Jae
