Had a 94 900s conv. the last of the old body style. Had for 5 years and just recently got back into a 99 9-3 Conv. My observations.
94 had thicker/better body panels and paint job. Never had a rock chip on the hood or a dent in the doors. 94 also rode like a truck, which I didn't realize untill I bought a passat.
The 99 drives great. While it's not as distinctive of a body style as the 94, it's still unique enough.
I had my 94 clutch replaced under warranty, dealer told me that was a good thing since they had to pull the engine to replace.
