Old SUVs are definitely hot. Broncos, Land Cruisers, and Land Rover are all insanely priced. I guess it's just a trend, people longing for simpler times, and the cars of their youth - these things got popular in the '70s after muscles cars and when there wasn't a lot of other automotive fun to be had, so I guess the timing makes sense. And I'm guessing a lot of it is supply based, they didn't make SUVs in the volume they do now and many were used hard, were winter drivers and rusted out, etc. Land Rover and Land Cruiser also weren’t imported in huge volumes. New Wranglers have among the best resale value of any new car right now and they’re selling as many as they can build.
One thing I’ve noticed about the old trucks is that they seem to change hands a lot. I think people buy them because they love the look, but end up hating how they drive because they really do drive like, well, old trucks. Solid axles on four leaf spring are terrible, especially on today’s bad roads, and a lot of these things really struggle to keep up with today’s traffic and have equally poor brakes.
I’ve got an International Scout, which thankfully hasn’t turned into a total yuppie mobile like the Broncos, Cruisers, Rovers, and Wagoneers are headed, but it’s probably only a matter of time. I find it to be a great vehicle as it’s a more useful size than many of the above without being giant and with a V8 and disc brakes it keeps up with traffic fine though you would never confuse the driving dynamics with a modern vehicle. And of course the top comes off!
