There's a whole series of computations that happen for airbags and the deployment is based on variables. I could definitely see an unusual collision resulting in "confused" airbags. Hard to say.
But, the explanation you can't query the computer is just untrue. We do it *all the time*. It's possible the body shop just has some generic OBDII tool and sure, it may not be able to, but the whole point of the SRS system logging data is for accident reconstruction. It would be silly if actually having the accident prevent access to accident reconstruction data! ;)
This is cleaned up for presentation, but this is what recovered crash data looked like - it's really interesting stuff!
