[edit - added X1 numbers for comparison]
9-5 wagon has a lot more useful room than a forester in spite of having comparable seats down cargo volume. Much of the forester volume is due to greater height:
- Forester cargo height is about 35" vs 29" for a 9-5. About 30" for X1.
- Width of the openings varies with height, but both are comparable in terms of the maximum practical width of box that will pass through - 41" for a 9-5, 40" for a forester. 37" for X1.
- Length to the seat backs with the seats up is a huge difference: 9-5=43", Forester=34". BMW X1=34".
Seats down, it is hard to get a clear comparable measurement (because it depends on how the front seats are adjusted), but assuming comparable legroom, similar length would be added on to the cargo capacity.
Comparison of volumes seats up: Forester=34.4cuft, 9-5=36.8cuft, and 9-3SC=29.7cuft. Note that the 9-3 has a larger "trunk floorspace" than the forester also: 39" long x 39" wide in spite of being less volume.
Regardless, you can't fill the trunk above the seatbacks with rear passengers, so the 9-5 in real terms is a more useful family hauler... so long as whatever you put back there is feathers so you don't wreck the rear suspension, but that's another story ;-)...
I actually found the Forester had about the same long trip hauling capacity as a c900 sedan. It is however better at swallowing a dishwasher than a sedan.
So X1 has comparable seats up cargo space to forester, just a bit narrower, and not as tall... but one can stack them roughly equally tall before stuff topples over on the rear passengers!
