Noel, thanks for a simplified explanation of the systems and likely culprits. I think the leaking rubber lines are the second thing to troubleshoot. First would be to dig into the pads/rotors and see for myself what I'm working with.
After a short week of camping, the van is stuck in Duluth needing a starter. The tow truck driver took it to his buddies shop; a small muffler and brake outfit run by this young guy. After waiting two days to get the part, he couldn't get the old starter out. He says the PO stripped one of the bolt holes and inserted a smaller bolt and got the nut inside the bell housing and somehow tightened it down. He said there was no way to get a wrench on the nut and that cutting the bolt might cause the bolt cylinder and nut to fall into the bell housing. He said the transmission would have to be removed to get at it. Whoa. I think it was getting close to closing and he just gave up. Anyway, we went back to Minneapolis (my brother was with us driving his Westy) and I spent yesterday doing the logistics. Was there a VW indi in Duluth? No. Dealership? Yes, but bukku expensive. Auto transport? Yes, but they would take too long and the van was not driveable (to get into transporter). So I opted for, ouch, $600 cash deal to tow it on flat bed tow truck 300 miles (roundtrip) to my indi in Minneapolis. And will of course have to pay for new starter installation. So those of you who bee-atch about Saab repairs take heart.
