I know the Tesla has sensor in the doors so they won't whack a low roof. I'm not sure how high they are fully open, but I could see entry and exit being awkward if they can only partially open. A Saab hatch can be pretty tall open too, I've whacked mine on a low concrete support in a parking garage before. I think the auto-opening SUV ones have sensors now too. A Bricklin or Delorean is a pretty low sports car so height isn't really an issue. They do need so horizontal space to open but much less than a regular door (I think about a foot, at least for the Bricklin).
I do think the choice of doors are pretty weird on the Tesla. It's unique and innovative enough to stand on its own with no real competition without what's likely to be a troublesome gimmick. I might like it less after seeing that profile next to my least favorite car on the road, the X6. Much more similar that I would expect, but the Tesla looks much svelter in most shots, compared to the X6 where the design goal seems to be to show off its shameless bulk in comparison to its hugely diminished utility (kind of the opposite of what a Tesla is going for)
