Man, you're killing me! :)
A friend of mine got her car murdered back in '03 and ended up with a brand new Liberty as a loaner for a month or two. I *remember* how bad the seats were and how poor the interior felt, but here in '16 I was hoping against hope I was being excessively judgmental about it all. To hear another person echo my 13 year old sentiment really puts doubt on this path. :)
Last night I read a lot about the Liberty and everything I read echoes what you said - they are mechanically pretty solid. This one would never go "offroad" per se, gravel roads and dirt driveways at most. It'd rarely if ever see highway trips, just local use so fuel economy isn't that important - 15mpg at 5,000 miles per year just isn't that much money vs. 25mpg. I would strongly consider a diesel (would *love* a diesel) but the CRDs are about twice what the 3.7s are, and $4,000 buys a *lot* of gas.
I'll go check one out at a dealer this weekend. TBH, poor interior quality isn't much of a concern - the would-be owner honestly can't tell the difference between good and bad - but the seats are important. She is older and, um, very out of shape. Comfortable seating is of value.
