To clarify from my earlier post. The interior is durable, it just isn't very nice. I'm at about 110k miles and it has held up well.

The CRD is not without its issues, but none are that crazy. Timing belt is due every 100k/10 years. You'll want to do the thermostat and water pump at the same time. Thermostats are ~$300, IIRC.

There is an issue with belt tension on the alternator that causes the shaft to bend or clutch to wear out prematurely. I just had my two year old alternator replaced under warranty. Listen for a chirp at the front of the engine.

You should be able to tell if there are any leaks in the turbo system coming from a Saab. Also check for base turbo. The turbo is laggy off the line, but the Jeep should practically do a wheelie once the turbo spools up.

I had a grounding issue with my PCM that drove me crazy earlier this summer.

They get sooty, so there are some bits and pieces to clean every once in a while. I replace my fuel filter every other year. Oil changes with synthetic Rotella @ 6,250 miles.

On bulletin boards (links below) people have listed as common issues things like bad glow plugs in early versions (probably replaced by now), they had bad torque converters early on that were replaced under warranty. People have reported head bolt issues not unlike ~2000 9-3s, but mine have always seemed fine.

It's a pretty common VM Motori engine that is used in lots of applications in Europe, from Chrysler minivans, to London Taxis, to boats. With that said, I'm not sure I would recommend it to someone that doesn't like to keep on top of things maintenance wise. I absolutely love mine, but readily admit it's not for everyone.
