Mechanical things take more space, more engineering, probably cost more to make, and certainly cost more to implement when you consider linkages, weight, and sensor arrays needed to track them. Transmissions these days are electronically controlled, so putting an electronic doodad in the car vs. a faking a legacy mechanical interface just makes sense.
Really, the whole PRNDL thing makes zero sense from a UI perspective, it's just old and we accept that's how it should be. I think the big issue with new shifters - and new car interfaces in general - is that the automotive world is TERRIBLE at this stuff! I really don't know why, but they are. Really bad!
Just look at HVAC controls - take any five cars from 1900 to 2000 and look at all the crazy designs we went through before everyone just sort of realized that three knobs - fan, vent, temp - is the cleanest, most elegant approach to vehicular HVAC control possible. It's noteworthy that's how the c900 did it in 1979, but it took 20+ years for the rest of the automotive industry to agree that's best. Now that layout is in virtually every car.
We're just going through the same iterative process again with transmission controls. It'll get sorted, one design will emerge as the best option. We're just stuck in the '80s again when everyone is trying to figure it out. ;)
