I don't think you can actually include Cadillac in this type of conversation. Cadillac enjoyed record sales when they cheapened their product and went for volume vs. profit. Johan de Nysschen said two years ago that Cadillac was going to stop focusing on volume and instead of profit, return to their roots rather than trying to be a mass-market player. He raised Cadillac prices across the board pretty much overnight to create some exclusivity and start moving Cadillac back upmarket. Way upmarket. Based on his plan, it's unlikely Cadillac will ever get back to their highest volumes. Hopefully, they can get back to their highest qualities! Comparing my '60s Cadillac to a '60s Mercedes is no competition - there is a reason we say "The Cadillac of X" and not the "The Mercedes of X." Cadillac used to mean something, and Johan de Nysschen is trying to make it mean something again.
