It wasn't just the 1970s as Cadillac was selling over 300,000 vehicles/year during the 1980s too. Cadillac's US sales right now are still under 200,000 despite offering inexpensive products.
Back in 1995 when Cadillac had just four models and the base price of the CHEAPEST was over $55,000 in current dollars they still sold more than they did here in 2015 with MORE models and inflation adjusted base prices starting as much as $20,000 LESS. Most of Cadillac's 2017 models (ATS, CTS, CT6, XTS, XT5) have inflation adjusted base prices LESS than even the CHEAPEST 1995 Cadillac.
I realize the overall premium/luxury car market has gotten less expensive but while many of the imports have at least enjoyed notable sales increases (some to record levels) during this time, Cadillac hasn't despite more and cheaper models.
