Ok, so I understand, this kind of thing is alarming and perhaps even dangerous for some, and I agree it should not happen early in a car's life... many brand new/lease buyers are not into fixing cars and may find this a significant disruption.
I think I have been fortunate in this regard because I got on board late with a used 2004 9-5 (2 in the family now), and many things were worked out by that point... they've been generally very reliable cars.
That said, I personally feel that the sludge issue was a much bigger problem for the early cars than the DIC (especially now that the DIC's give some warning before failure). A sludged motor not dealt with properly and in time (which btw costs way more than a DIC), needs to be pulled and replaced. We are talking thousands of $ and many hours of work, not $200-300 and 5 minutes. Keep in mind: it is easier and safer to change a DIC at the side of the road than to change out a flat tire.
Also, I've had things like ignition cables pop off while driving, cap/rotor failure while driving - these are equivalent to DIC failure, but cheaper. similar time to fix +/-. Similar issues are common on many brands (eg a friend who formerly had an A4 had repeated coil pack failures). I don't say this to say that the breakdowns are not problematic, especially for those not mechanically inclined, but that they are less problematic than other engine failure modes.
I've also had to deal with failed HG's, burnt valves, dead trannys, etc all of which require pulling apart the engine and replacing many things at considerable expense. I'd be ecstatic to find out the trouble was just the DIC rather than a HG. One time a spark plug went bad prematurely (this was a c900) rapidly causing the engine to lose power and sound awful... was ever I happy to find out it was just a bad plug and not $1000 of work!
Really all I was trying to say was that CR is more or less tripe, not so much cause a fuss over the DIC issue. I agree that SAAB (and GM) should have done better on this... there are other issues on the car that could have been better addressed also... but all cars have their weak points... need to compare apples and oranges... not always easy to do, so in a sense CR has a difficult endeavour, but nonetheless, the end result is not very worth reading to me imho... that was all I meant...
