Even if it wasn't actually better, perception goes a long way. In '03 people were starting to become aware of AWD as both a safety and a performance feature - everyone was making at least a few models available with it except Saab. At the same time, the "fear" of RWD being less safe had long since disappeared (no doubt due to good rear suspension, TCS, and ESP) and the performance benefits were undisputed, but Saab was left with neither RWD nor AWD, making it less credible with the performance and safety crowd... even the outdoorsy crowd! I don't really recall any of the magazines ever complaining about Saab's engines, but they never failed to mention torque steer disrupting a good drive. That's what happens when you send a lot of power to the steering wheels. It disappointed me to no end that GM kept trying to shove V6s down our throats instead of focusing on the *actual* thing that was hurting sales... .and that's the inherent drawbacks of powering the steering wheels. Too bad for us. :(
I'd love to own an XWD 9-3, but they scare the crap out of me... the system doesn't seem particularly reliable and is difficult and expensive to service. I've become quite fond of our 9-3 Aero (even though it's a V6 ;) and driving the rear wheels would be awesome! it is, however, a joy I will probably never know. ;)
