Colleagues of ours were long time vw owners, but struggled with them in the past decade or so (more problematic). Got a Suby, then back to a CPO Audi A4 (previous generation), lots of issues and concerns about the cost of maintenance (non-dealer, but even the local indy was costly)... tried bmw x3 for a while, similar concerns, back to Suby now...
There is kind of a void as the euro cars are nicer to drive, more solid, etc, but with so many more features, maintenance can be high. If you have access to a really good and reasonably priced indy for a particular euro brand, that might be the better choice... ie choosing the best support structure.
Other friends with a S60 have really liked it and are now onto the V60. iirc it has more rear seat space than 9-3ss, but 9-3ss legroom is pretty bad for a car that size imho. The rounded seat bottom contours are not needed. If S60 is too small, Volvo does make bigger cars, even in wagon form.
I like the Alfas also. Probably would never buy one, but they are very nice. The bmw 4 series grand touring sedan is about as close to a saab form as anything else out there today. Maybe it can even be had in a turbo 4? I haven't checked that though, but it would be on my list to drive if I was shopping new (for non-hybrid/electric vehicles anyway)...
