I'm not sure how this works in other states, but that coworker of mine who had an S4 bought it via Carmax because they had a pretty comprehensive warranty available. He had several issues with the S4 - valve cover leaks, power steering leaks, some other random "old car" stuff and the warranty covered virtually all of it. The power steering leak was a $2200 job all said and done, money he didn't pay. I always focus on CPO, but CarMax might be worth looking at too. The upside for him was when he sold it he got top dollar, since everything even slightly out of whack was dealt with on someone else's dollar. I suspect it was helpful that he took it to a pretty anal Audi enthusiast... you know, the type of shop that thinks every little noise is a mandatory $500 repair, but...

It's obviously not quite as good as a factory warranty - they won't fix loose trim - but at least you know the car will stay running. :)
