Lets face it, the Equinox is typically GM: generic large kid hauler. The only thing really separating it from a minivan are doors that open rather than slide and everything is raised up. You can get minivans with AWD, so that isn't really even a difference. So I don't see anything "cool" about it.
The other thing about the Equinox is I don't see how it in any way is a "crossover"... Sure it's not based on a pickup truck, but to me, it is a bog standard SUV. I rented a GMC Acadia once (essentially the same thing), and it was massive, a gas hog, basically fit everything in the Simpsons Canyonero episode. There was no "crossover" about it, it was an SUV.
We have friends who own a Honda Pilot - we call it their school bus. These things are great for hauling kids and their junk, but they are not cool. Basically the SUV has become the modern minivan for moms who want to sit up high and feel like they are not driving minivans... The minivan jumped the shark, and now the SUV is no longer "cool" (was it ever though?). Lots of moms here drive giant Escalade, or GMC Yukon XL or whatever. Those things are SUV's plain and simple. Some don't go that big, but they're still in SUV's. Like really, in what way is a RAV4 cool?
To me, something like the old Ford Freestyle - a raised wagon shaped vehicle with AWD, normal doors, and 7 passenger seating, really blurred the lines between minivan, wagon and SUV. However, it was built on a Volvo platform and, like the XC70, not raised to the extent of an SUV. Most of the "crossovers" today are just SUV's. There are smaller SUV's (CUV's) and some that blend more with hatchbacks (eg Subaru Crosstrek) and those I would say actually crossover... even a Porsche Macan, which is a CUV, but with real sports car credibility... there's something blended enough to be "crossed over"... but those are all more "cool" than an Equinox or Pilot or Santa Fe imho...
If you want a car that will be cool regardless of the flavour of the month, get a 911. If you want to be able to haul stuff as well, a SAAB, right?
The 99 turbo, or the SPG... those are true crossovers: sports cars that can haul a dishwasher and a case of beer in the back!
And if he needs to actually drive a truck like crossover and not look like a mom, maybe he needs something like this:
