I think the same "passing interest in cars" sentiment has been around for a very long time. I grew up in the 1970s-80s and while I was a car enthusiast from a young age, most were not and that remained true in the 1990s, 2000s and is true today with some fluctuations due to serious economic factors like what we went through in the late 2000s to early 2010s.
Many premium and luxury imports have become more and more popular over time (e.g., Audi, BMW, Land Rover, Lexus, Mercedes-Benz, and Porsche have all seen RECORD sales in the U.S. in just the last few years) but overall I think what was true long ago is still true today which is that most view cars simply as transportation. It is a reason why "vanilla" cars have long typically been the top sellers. As far as colors go, even when there was more variety the most popular colors still tended to be silvers, blues, beiges, and whites.
