A guy working for me said his retired parents were replacing their car and bought a mini-van. When he asked them "Why a min-van for two retired people?", they responded with the same comment you did.
Easier to enter and exit as the seat height nearly matches hip height. Easier to extract groceries and other goods from the back rather than lifting them out from a trunk. Sometimes better visibility, although this depends upon the specific vehicle.
Then the 85 year old guy living across the street from us bought the smallest Jeep vehicle. His son-in-law was completely baffled by this choice until I told him what my co-worker heard from his parents.
