I dunno if I'd go all the way to marvel - GM was getting 400 hp from a 5.7l pushrod V8 since 2002. Ford got 420-430hp from the 5.4l mod motor in the late '90s (380rwhp). Both of these without valve timing trickery and whatnot. BMW's M62 was making 400hp from quite a bit less displacement as early as 1998. By the time the M27x motors appeared, Mercedes was definitely playing catchup. (Which sort of baffles me, since the silly 90* V6 motors had been out for a while a that point!)
The M272/273 are good motors, but pretty typical for their time IMHO. Of all the things I would attribute to Mercedes in the last 40 years, impressive engine design would not be one of them. And, frankly, why should they be? Durability and ease (comfort?) of use is the thing you want from a Mercedes, and I think the W211 delivers that quite well.
